More long-term potential from batteries

France announced that it would ban sales of all petrol and diesel cars by 2040. Dutch bank ING stated it expected electric vehicles to have a lower cost of ownership than petrol or diesel models by 2024, leading it to predict vehicles in Europe to be fully battery electric by 2035. Under such a scenario, and assuming full electrification in Europe as well as Japan by this target year, Roskill estimates nickel demand from automotive batteries would exceed 350kt by 2025 and 750kt by 2030 – more if large markets such as China and the USA follow suit.
