Platinum Group Metals Corporation helping boost IT skills of the youth of Siargao Island

Platinum Group Metals Corporation (PGMC), the operating arm in Surigao del Norte of Global Ferronickel Holdings, Inc. (FNI), through its Chairman Joseph C. Sy, recently donated P1.6 million worth of computer equipment and software to Siargao Island Institute of Technology (SIIT) in Dapa. Siargao. The donation seeks to equip SIIT’s more than 1,000 students with the necessary IT skills to help them excel in their chosen field of expertise and to meet the burgeoning demand of business entities investing in the island.

“PGMC is committed to helping improve the level of education in the province of Surigao del Norte. Being an educator myself, apart from the 3 R’s of Reading, ‘Riting and ‘Rithmetic, there is a need for today’s youth to be adept in the use of computer technology in order for them to be competitive in the business world,” said Atty. Dante R. Bravo, FNI President.

And in honor of the said donation, SIIT has put up a new department aptly named the Joseph C. Sy School of Information Technology. The 30 new computers and other IT equipment will also be housed in a new facility.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to PGMC and its Chairman for their invaluable support. This further strenghtens SIIT’s reputation as one of the premier schools in the province since its establishment in 1995,” said Atty. Francisco T. Matugas, SIIT President.

Surigao Del Norte Governor Sol F. Matugas was also present to witness the official turnover.

“Having quality education is something that cannot be taken out of our youth. I am very delighted that the youth of Siargao will now be able to take advantage of the many opportunities for growth brought about by the on-going development in the island,” said Governor Matugas.
